Adults With Learning Disabilities
Adults with learning disabilities may:
- Learn well
when shown, but have difficulty following written directions
and/or remembering several verbal directions
- Express
thoughts verbally, but have difficulty putting them on paper
- Be good with
mechanical things, but have difficulty with reading, writing and
spelling
- Be unable to
complete a job application form
- Feel anxious,
depressed, or have low self-esteem
Did you know? Up to 10 % of the
general population has a learning disability.
There are a lot of adults with unidentified
learning disabilities. Many have developed amazing coping strategies
to allow them to function to their fullest. Some are very clever at
hiding their disability, yet are in constant fear of being
discovered. Some people blame themselves and just believe they are
"a failure", "stupid", or "worthless".
Living with a learning disability can have an
ongoing impact on friendships, work, schooling, self-esteem and
daily life.
People with learning disabilities can
succeed when solid coping skills and strategies are developed.
Learning disabilities don't go away but
success is possible. You are not alone.
